Bobby Marshall Book Event on Zoom Feb. 25, 7pm EST Correction

"Breaking Through the Line: Bobby Marshall, the N.F.L.’s First African American Player" by Terry McConnell is now available.

(I apologize for sending this out twice. In the first version the date of the event in the title was wrong. The actual date is Friday, February 25, 2022 at 7pm Eastern Standard Time.) This will be a virtual book event on Zoom to celebrate Black History Month and Bobby Marshall, the First African American Player in the N.F.L. This event is sponsored by Arms Library in Shelburne Falls, MA.

Bobby Marshall broke the color line to join the N.F.L. in 1920, where he made All Pro at the age of 40. He did this 27 years before Jackie Robinson broke the color line in Major League Baseball. Marshall was a true American hero, the first African American to make All American in football from the Big Ten. He graduated from the University of Minnesota in 1907 as a trained lawyer, fought for the rights of farmers at the Minnesota State Grain Commission and played pro football until age 54, 10 years longer than Tom Brady! Always a mentor of youth, he was the first African American coach in the Big Ten. Marshall was also a superstar in baseball and ice hockey. Contact Terry McConnell at runnerwithasthma@gmail.com ahead of time to access this event.

Terry McConnell’s book, Breaking Through the Line: Bobby Marshall, the N.F.L.’s First African American Player, is available at Boswell’s Books Shelburne Falls MA, World Eye Bookshop Greenfield MA, Barnes and Noble Hadley MA, the Minnesota History Center St. Paul MN, and amazon.com.

Half of McConnell’s royalties from Breaking Through the Line…will go to the Bobby Marshall Scholarship Fund. This scholarship is for student-athletes at the University of Minnesota who demonstrate academic excellence and leadership.
